CFM56 Stage 1 LPT Nozzle Repair of Wear on the Leading Edge (CFM56-5A & -5C)

One cause of rejection of CFM56-5A & -5C LPT Nozzle during overhaul, is the Leading Edge thickness below acceptable limit.

Having worked at first step together with the OEM to adjust the criteria in the aim to limit the rejection rate, Snecma Services then decided to develop a repair in order to further decrease the rejection rate for this cause.

On the fondation of its expertise in diffusion brazing (RBD process), Snecma Services has developped a repair based on the brazing of a preform on the convex side of the airfoil that enables to restore Leading Edge thickness up to acceptable value. This repair has now been approved by the OEM and will be introduced within next ESM revisions as Rep 009 (CFM56-5A) or Rep 039 (CFM56-5C). It is estimated that this should decrease the scrap rate by about 7%, and nearly avoid any rejection of Nozzles for this cause.

This is another example of Snecma Services commitment to provide CFM56 engines operators with solutions that enable to improve durability of parts, engine performances on wing and to reduce maintenance costs.

Rep 009 for CFM56-5A (Rep 15-93852) and Rep 039 (Rep 15-93853) are now available in production at Snecma Services Châtellerault plant. Customers may return for repair, the parts previously rejected for Leading Edge thickness reason.
